At how many weeks can a baby start hearing sounds from the outside world?
Question by geeboy: At how several weeks can a baby start hearing sounds from the outside world?
My wife is now 15 weeks and the scan on wednesday showed a extremely active baby – punching like rocky, kicking like jackie chan and spinning like a yoyo, lol. ( excellent to see by the way). Just wanted to know when the baby can hear voices, music and so on?

It’s around 18 weeks that they begin to hear, period. That’s when the nerve endings from the ear to the brain connect, so they begin hearing mother’s heartbeat, voice, stomach noises, etc. Then somewhere around week 25 the baby begins to hear noises from outside mom’s body, such as voices, music, and loud noises! I’m 31 weeks and my son has just started jumping if I drop a book or slam a door!

A fetus can respond to sounds at about 16 weeks and at about 12 weeks they can recognize their mothers voice. And they feel how you feel. How cool is that!

you’re baby’s ears begin to form at around eight weeks and become structurally complete at about 24 weeks. But as early as 18 weeks, the bones of the inner ear and the nerve endings from the brain have developed enough for your baby to hear sounds such as your heartbeat and blood moving through the umbilical cord. He may even be startled by loud noises! For the rest of the pregnancy, sound serves as a baby’s major information channel.
By week 25, your baby begins to hear your voice — and your partner’s — and may even recognize those voices as early as week 27. Sounds may be muffled, though, because the ears are still covered with vernix, the thick waxy coating that protects the skin from becoming chapped by the amniotic fluid.
Hope this helps and good luck with the pregnancy X

Hearing starts from about 20 weeks but it still has to develop so I imagine it would be a few weeks more before it could hear music or voices etc

Your baby can hear noises as vibrations now. It will take a while before the vibrations turn into real noises like what we hear.

Many scientific studies that have tried to investigate fetuses’ responses to sound (eyeblink, heart-rate changes etc. in utero) generally give 20 weeks as the time fetuses generally begin to respond to sound. By that time, the structural anatomy of the ear is complete as well, although neural development of auditory pathways continues.
However, there is no definitive answer to when a baby can “hear” outside the womb. According to one study, a few babies can respond to loud low pitched sounds as early as 19 weeks. By 27 weeks, most fetuses can hear low pitched sounds but not high pitched ones. By 35 weeks, higher pitches can be heard. Softer sounds are detectable as the fetus ages.
There is confusing research that says babies generally respond to sound between 16 to 18 weeks. This is misleading. They are either disproved but still cited studies or they concern babies’ response to vibration generated by sounds instead of sound itself.

around 17-18 weeks they start to hear the sounds that are inside the womb like digestive sounds and the sounds from the placenta etc.. its around 24-28 weeks that the baby can hear well enough to hear noises from outside the womb, and loud noises may make your little baby jump! obviously its not clear like it is to us! I am not sure how they work these things out, but at 15 weeks your baby should be responsive to touch and feel the vibrations of music even if he or she cant hear them. congratulations on your active little one.. hope all goes well.
