I moved house 5 days after my daughter was born – At 3 days old we were running errands, I basically had little choice but to get out and about at that point. I would have liked to have had a couple of weeks after she was born to adjust, but I think even in that time I would have wanted to get out. A friend of mine started taking her newborn to our mother and baby groups (with her older baby) when the youngest was 4 weeks old.

With atleast three of my four children, we have ended up stopping at Wal Mart or the grocery store on the way home from the hospital.
My youngest was born in April, on a Monday. We were released from the hospital on Wednesday and stopped at the hospital on the way home. On Friday, we made it to a homeschool meeting (but only because it was next door) and that night we went to my older children’s baseball game (but stayed in the vehicle).
Take proper precautions- do not let others hold your baby, if they do compel them to wash their hands prior to doing so. Being out and about builds a baby’s immune system, and if you are breastfeeding (as I have with all of mine) they get the benefit of your immunities as well. I liked the fact that if the baby was in the infant carrier car seat, which was then placed in the stroller, I could use the sun canopies to block people from touching the baby if we were at the mall or such. The My Baby Nest was also good for that purpose with my youngest.

a few days after i gave birth i took her to see her relative sfor the first time, it was bad weather with lots of snow after that so we barely went anywhere for several weeks. once id recovered about a month after the birth i started going out most days with her. i wouldnt personally go to any baby groups until they were more active like sitting/rolling as they cant get involved in anything, but its a personal choice if you feel ready to start going to them to meet other mums then go whenever you want theres no right or wrong time.
