How to ease colds in a breastfed 3.5 months old baby? If dad’s sick, should I send him to sleep in the couch?

Question by ♥♥ Shaun’s Mamma ♥♥: How to ease colds in a breastfed three.five old baby? If dad’s sick, ought to I send him to sleep in the couch?
My son doesn’t have runny/stuffy nose now, only cough, will he have runny nose later?
How ideal to speed up the course of colds in babies?
I’ve asked his doctor/pediatrician, and she said there’s no more than-the-counter medication for babies underneath 1 year old.

His dad, btw, is still operating a fever, should I send him away from baby?

I would if you have a option. I had a fever yesterday and I held and kissed my child and nursed him. But I am single. Being exposed to illness does increase the immune technique, but if he is so young, I would inform your husband to remain away for now, especially with a fever. My son is a little sick, but not as bad as me, so he is not acquiring worse from becoming around me, thank god!

It’s scary when little guys get sick, isn’t it? Been there. My guess, just from experience with my little one, is that if he doesn’t have the sniffles now he may not get them. People usually get sniffles first and then the cough in my experience. But definitely send dad to stay on the couch at least. And if baby feels warm, check his temp and if he has a fever, call the doctor or take him to an emergency room. Little baby brains are fragile and heat is bad for them.

there is baby paracetemol or ibruprofen which can be given from about one month old, just check the appropriate dose…. it is good for fevers if your baby has one, and may be good for a cough if his throat is sore. This will only really relieve the symptoms, there is nothing much you can do to speed up the course of the cold…. i don’t think baby could catch a fever from daddy, does daddy have other symptoms of a cold? if so, best to minimise contact, but baby will always pick up different things throughout their life so don’t stress too much about protecting them from every bug or germ…

If the baby is already sick i wouldnt send dad to the couch he lives in the same house so banishing him to the couch wont do too much. Lock yourself and you baby in the bathroom turn on all the hot water taps and sit in the steam it will help loosen any mucus the baby might have on his chest helping him to cough it up and shortening the cold. I dont know if you r in australia but we have “baby panadol” and “baby nurofen” which will help for all the nasty aches and pains associated with a cold and help with a fever if he has one. Hope i could help… Oh and keep his fluids up if he isnt a fan of water i give my daughter gastrolyte in water its raspberry flavoured and a small amount gets her to take alot more water.

okay well as a scientist i know that it takes around 10-14 days for a bug to show signs. so chances are, when ur hubby was catching it, so was baby, or atleast baby has been exposed to dads kisses, the stuff dad touched and used etc.

as a mum, i know that u cant stop kids getting sick, but i have a 2 year old who has never been sick. u can buy some paracetamol, but i recommend that u dont, kids only get ammune to the crap anyway, and plus, it doesnt cure a cold, only relieves them briefly.

overall, id say ur baby can be around dad, since he probably has the bug inside him anyway.
no way of telling how the bug will affect him, and he may not even get the runny nose. hope i helped u :) xxx

First off, you are already doing the best thing possible for a sick baby: breastfeeding. At each feeding, germs from your babies mouth enter your milk ducts and your body makes an antibody for it and delivers it at the next feeding, so your immune system is helping his fight that cold.
They took infant tylenol cold off the market, so there isn’t cold medicine for babies, but there is still fever/pain reducer. If he’s coughing a lot, his throat is probably sore, so I’d give him some infant tylenol or ibuprofen. Babies hurt and ache when they are sick just like we do, it’s kinda cruel not to at least give them some tylenol/ibuprofen when they are sick.
And no need to send Dad away, he’s in the same house, so he’s more than likely going to get his germs, and as he’s already sick, it’s too late anyway. Colds are communicable before you start showing symptoms.
Just keep on breastfeeding and your immune system will add to his.
