put a baby corral (connected gates) around it

Keep an eye on the baby while it is in the room and only let him, or her in the room while you are in the room, if you would like to.

    Tree in a playpen.

suspend the Christmas tree from the ceiling – about two feet off the ground.

  5. spikeyoz Says:

go for a smaller tree and put a decorated fence around it that the baby cant get past and make it into a nice christmas scene that you all can enjoy and a bit of positive reinforcement will help as well

my twins trashed my tree, by christmas we only had a few ornaments at the top of the tree!!! but this they are older and wont mess ( i hope).

  7. bluebellsx2 Says:

what about putting a few of the cheap ones at the bottom of the tree where she is most likely to grab.

other than keeping a watch out babies of that age do not understand not to touch especially brightly coloured items.

are you getting a real tree, if so watch the needles! speaking from experience that is!

Maybe put the tree inside ne f thse low fency play pens, the baby can’t go near it, or put the baby in one. Or you can just try to keep an eye on the baby all the time? Or don’t let the baby in the room unless you are there? Good luck. But isn’t christmas a while away?

We got around this by getting a slightly smaller tree, then putting it on top of a small table (kinda like a coffee table), so that the ornaments were high enough to be out of baby’s reach! I pinched the idea from my mum who always did this when we were small, you can get lots of nice Christmas themed tablecloths etc to spread on top of the table, or you can also use wrapping paper to make it look a bit more festive! We found using a foil type paper worked really well, as you get more reflection from the tree lights and it actually looks really pretty :)

It depends on the height of your ceilings but we still have a pretty big tree, its about 5ft or so, which by the time you put it on a table touches the ceiling! So you needn’t get a titchy tree to do this.

Even though my kids are a little bit older now we still put the tree on a tble, I think too it helps to show off the tree, having it that bit higher up…so I’m probably going to do the same again this year!

You could pop a fire guard around it

Im the same i love a huge tree with all the decs on it, my kids when babies loved to look at the lights, i used to take them over and show them the tree but they couldn’t touch, could you not place an extending stair gate or similar in front of the tree?

    1) The Tree

Get hubby to put a couple of hooks in the wall (one at tree height and one lower) and get some stong fishing wire. Attach the tree to the hooks to prevent it tipping/being pulled over. Do it at a slight angle (wire sloping down to tree) as the pitch will keep it anchored in place.

    2) The ornaments

Put all glass/porcelain ornaments or those with small parts toward the top of the tree. This doesn’t always end up making the tree as appealing as it could be, but it’s better to keep these types of ornaments out of the baby’s reach.

Make some gingerbread stars/shapes with your older daughter and hang these on the lower branches – if baby DOES manage to pull one off and eat it at least if won’t hurt her!

You could also hang chunky wooden ornaments lower down – even some of those that are actually baby toys so she can have them afterwards (those wooden bead strings and ‘feely’ wooden toys, you know the kind of thing?)

Oh, don’t use any of those plastic hook things – they will be lethal.

    3) The electric cords

Be sure that all electrical cords are tucked safely toward the back of the tree, out of the reach of little hands. If the cord lengths are long, bunch them up and secure them with plastic tie straps.

    4) The presents

Let Santa bring ALL the presents – baby will definitely rip the paper off anything she sees.

    If all else fails:

Do as others have suggested and put a barrier/baby pen around it or just have a ‘table’ tree this year.

I had a 9 month old last Christmas and was scared of the same thing!! In the end we decided not to have one at all, as our living room was really too small anyway. This year I will have a 21 month old and another 9 month old. I think I’m either going to bypass it for this year again (which I really don’t want to but might have to) or else get a small enough one for it to be moved onto a table when the kids are around.

  15. me Says:

Put a baby fence around the tree.

  16. puffin57 Says:

The idea of putting a playpen round the tree was good. If you really want a big tree, then maybe this would be a good solution.

However, maybe consider having a smaller tree and put it high – maybe on a shelf or table (making sure it is also out of baby’s reach!). We did this when our son was a baby, we had a corner shelf and I put a really small tree up – it looked lovely and along with the other decorations it worked. The following year the tree got bigger – we got a 3 ft one and put it on a side table – again it was blocked off from a curious child by the sofa and coffee table.

But, if you really want to keep the big tree, then I would go for a playpen.

  17. Nikkisparkles Says:

Do you have a real tree? My middle child, who was 15months last christmas was frightened of the tree after getting a prickle from it, and didn’t go near it after that. Other than that get a smaller tree, and stand it on a table out of reach of fiddly fingers. It may not be a problem though.

  18. Freyas Mummy & Daddy Says:

i think the idea of putting a play gate around the tree when your baby is in the room is a good idea. you can always take it away when your baby is not in the room.
please, please, please make sure your baby cannot reach any christmas lights, baby’s have a Habit of chewing on bright shiny warm things! also be care full with tinsel or long stringy things, babies can easily accidentally strangle themselves so you do need to make sure you have something to stop your baby getting to close. maybe you could put the big tree outside or in the kitchen or another room and have a smaller tree on a table in the room you are talking about putting the tree!

You must be so excited about baby’s first christmas :D what a great age for it!
