They’re annoying and horrible. When my son was 3 weeks old, his broke and the battery part dropped on his head! He was fine, other than a bump but I was upset and put it away forever.

Sound and light shows are better…
This is ours: http://www.mothercare.com/VTech-Baby-Bear-Sweet-Dreams/dp/B000JF9MFK/sr=1-6/qid=1254860186/ref=sr_1_6/280-9318370-2505015?_encoding=UTF8&m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&n=44573031&mcb=core we used it for a while and it helped Lukas sleep.

When he was about 6 months, I discovered this CD: http://www.sleepytimelullabies.co.uk/ We play it at all nap times and bedtime and he falls asleep no trouble. It’s really beautiful music/singing too (unlike most lullaby CDs) and never tired of it!
