the only thing i would recommend is infacol incase he/she suffers from trapped wind any other medications including calpol you would need prescribed by a doctor when first born. Good luck with the baby

A nasal aspirator and saline spray for colds and a cool mist vaporizer for those times as well as during the winter if you have forced air heat.

I had my 3rd baby last November and didnt buy in any medical things for him being born. I had Calprofen in the house for after his 1st set of injections at 8 weeks (although he didnt need any :) ). The only essential I would have in the house is teething powders (I use Ashton & Parsons – small white box with blue writing – cost about £3) as all my children started teething around 2 months (although didnt have teeth until a year). Saline drops would be handy if they take a cold over the winter, but be careful letting anyone one in to see your baby if they have the cold as it can turn to Brochiolitus in babies. My eldest ended up in hospital at 3 weeks old for a few days because of this :( Other than that, I would say maternity pads and breast pads, if you are breast feeding. Good luck x

Baby nail files… you can’t use clippers until they are 4 weeks old because the nail is still fused to the skin.

(can’t live without recommendation—->)Gripe Water – comes in different brand names but it works wonders on newborn tummy issues. You may need this starting around 2 weeks of age. We’ve used it maybe 5 times in the past 8 weeks and it hasn’t failed us yet. When she can’t sleep due to gas or stomach pain, it settles her right down. Gas drops never did a thing, but this was gold in a bottle.

Syringe for measuring aforementioned gripe water. I measure it in the syringe but put it in a bottle for her to suck down at her own pace. Trying to drop it in her mouth straight from the syringe didn’t work for us.

Baby bottle – even if you’re planning to EBF, you never know. Just one, cheap, basic bottle should be on hand incase of emergency.

Soft hair brush and comb – proper hair care and daily semi-agressive brushing will keep away cradle cap.

Q-tips or alcohol pads for cleaning her belly button. Some doctors recommend no alcohol now, but the jury is split and the general opinion is that it doesn’t make a difference. After the stump fell off it was the only way we could get in deep enough to clean out the remaining crud.

A&D or Vaseline for his/her bum, to be used with every diaper change.

A zinc-based diaper rash cream incase of rash. We’ve never had to use it but have a tube of Butt Paste on hand.

Infant tub – I don’t know how people wash baby without it (and just learned that it’s an ‘optional’ item). Some say the sink is just fine, but the tub is shaped to let her lounge and enjoy the water while getting cleaned.

LOTS of comfortable sanitary pads for you. You’re going to bleed for a long time. Can also double as breast pads as long as they are unscented. I didn’t know that you’d still leak like crazy even if you weren’t breastfeeding. As long as I was staying in the house I just stuck a maxi pad cut in half inside my bra.

A baby thermometer is great to have. Baby nail clippers and tub. I have a fleece “swaddler” and my 1 month old daughter absolutly loves it. I’m from Canada so not sure on the brand names…sorry

A rectal thermometer and some infant tylenol or infant motrin are the only things you need to have. A rectal thermometer is the only way of getting an accurate temperature on an infant; ear thermometers and forehead scanners seem less invasive, but are not accurate on children under the age of 2 or so.

Gas drops! The second night my son was home he screamed for an hour. I had tried changing him, feeding and burping him but could not get him to settle down. Then I finally remembered that the doctor told me it was ok to give him gas drops. Gave them to him and in ten minutes he was gassing and settling down. Was a sleep in 15 minutes. I also suggest nail clippers and files. Gripe drops are great for hiccups ( my son had hiccups everyday for the first three weeks). Rectal thermetor, diaper rash ointment and baby oil. I also suggest baby brush and comb. Use daily to help baby not get cradle cap. Lots of baby lotion. My sons hands and feet were really dry. Congrats on your little one!
