Q&A: How long will your baby sleep in your room for?
Query by Mary: How long will your baby sleep in your area for?
Just a believed as I am arranging to have her up coming to my bed in a moses basket. In the UK they say you should really have them in your room for 6mths. Our house is tiny and her nursery is 3mtres from our space so i was organizing on placing her in her cot in her personal room when she grows out of the moses basket. How long are you preparing for your baby to be in your area for and where is he/she sleeping? xx

My son was in our room for about 8 weeks. The area was compact, and it would warm up truly quickly. We moved him at that age, mainly because that’s when he started only needing 1 night feed.

Eldest managed at most a week before banishment, youngest was in her own room from day 1. He had a baby alarm, she was loud enough even at the far end of the landing with both doors shut (which they seldom were). If in their own room, you aren’t waking each pother up all night long and everyone’s better tempered.
I actually used to park the basket inside the cot for the eldest to save space. When youngest reached the ends of the basket I had to go and buy the eldest a bed (19mo, meh, he only fell out the first couple of nights and he thought it was funny anyway). Youngest was in a bed at 15mo because she screamed the house down if you put her behind bars or closed a door where she couldn’t reach the handle.
Enjoy your little animal, but keep a tiny bit of space and time for you and hubby. Feel free to email

You do right! My mother-in-law was horrified that we moved our daughter into her own room at 3 months.
It got to the stage where, when we stirred, we woke her up and visa versa. by this time, she had been sleeping right through for a while and so we all slept a lot better.
Don’t have a ‘plan’ as such, follow your motherly instinct and you will know when both you and your daughter are ready.

All our babies went straight into their own rooms from the day we bought them home from the hospital. We have a baby monitor, so could easily hear them when they cried. I personally think the recommendation to have them in your room for 6 months is a little extreme.
Ours have had no problems being in their own room, so it worked well for us.
Do what you feel is best for you and your baby, in the end that’s all that matters.

I had my daughter in our room till she was 8 months old. (She was very small and stayed in a large, sturdy moses basket all that time.) When she was about 6 months old I started putting her in her cot in her own room for day time naps so she would get used to it. xx

My babies sleep with me until they ask for their own room.

6 months, this is the recommended age by GPs and medical authorities in preventing cot death. It dramatically reduces the risks.

I’m adopting older children- so they’ll share my room as long as it takes them. Adopted children often need the extra security- having already been torn away from so much in their lives.
As for my babies, they sleep with me until they ask to have their own room. I’m a bed-sharer.

My daughter was in our room for the first 6 months, after 3 months she was in our room in her cot as she outgrow her Moses basket quite quickly. Our second baby is due in May and we will do exactly the same.

My oldest slept in our room in a bassinet then crib for 5 months, we lived in a 1 bedroom apartment when she was born, moved her to her own bedroom as soon as we moved to a larger apartment..
My second was never slept in our room.. He was in the hospital for several months after birth, when we brought him home he had several machines too much equipment to keep in our bedroom he needed the space of his own… I had the wireless monitor alarms in my bedroom at night set to silent mode .. His bedroom door was about 3 meters from our bedroom door…
My third was in our bedroom for 3 weeks just long enough for me to get over most of the soreness/tenderness of delivery making moving from our room to hers in the night less of an epic journey… We did use a baby monitor…. We converted what was called a master bedroom retreat in the house plan into a nursery for her, basically it’s a small room off the bedroom with just a door separating the two…

Our son slept in our room in his pack n play for the first 4 weeks. We then put him in his own room in his crib. Once he was in his own room, he woke up less frequently. Started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks.

8 weeks. Then the moises basket was too small.
It was a really good thing as she slept so much better in her own room. She wasn’t bothered by us going to bed or getting up in the morning.
With the baby monitor, we hear very well what is happening in her room or if she needs us.
