Question by Natasha: How much milk should an eight week old infant drink in 1 go?
A buddy of mine has an 8 week old infant and is worried that she is feeding him to very much in on go. He will drink an 7oz bottle but is nonetheless hungry so them breast feeds for an other five mins. I mentioned to her about just giving an 8oz but is that to much? My argument is that she BF following he drinks the 7oz so what’s the different’s? Any aid is welcome.

He really should be drinking however significantly he wants. You can not overfeed an infant.

Baby should drink as much as he wants, as often as he wants.

I’m a bit puzzled though. Is baby getting bottles or breastfeeding? If baby is formula fed, then there isn’t going to be any milk in her breasts … so maybe he’s just comfort nursing? And if mom is mostly pumping… why? If she can breastfeed AFTER a 7 ounce bottle, why can’t she breastfeed instead of a 7 ounce bottle. (One of the wonderful things about breastfeeding is that a breastfed baby CAN’T be overfed, and you never have to fret about how many ounces he gets.)

i disagree with giving him that much i was told my baby was suppose to drink so many ounces and bottles a day you might want to check with your babys doctor to be on the safe side

baby might be comfort sucking.if i supplemented with formula and/or pumped milk, she would still be nursing off of me after that (she’d get 4oz’s)..

i was always told to feed baby whenever he/she needed.. my pedia told me to space out her feeding’s (instead of every 2hours..every 3hours).. i never did that.. my baby told me when she wanted to be fed

baby will only take what they need, you cant over feed them with milk.
my health visitor used to say to me that babies are very sensible and know when enough is enough!

every baby is different too, so you cant really compare.

at newborn stage, best way to know they are getting enough is to get them weighed each week and your health visitor will advise you
