The Weld District Attorney’s workplace on Thursday dropped all costs against the man accused of threatening court protection guards with a set of nail clippers.

And whether or not Mark Becker of Greeley in fact threatened them at all is up for debate.

Becker mentioned he couldn’t comment on the case under orders from his attorney, but court records show different interpretations of what was explained that day.

There’s no debate that Becker held up the nail clippers in front of the guard. Becker, 60, was planning to attend a Weld County Commissioner meeting and had to pass via a metal detector since courtrooms are also located in the Weld County Centennial Center, 915 10th St.

Court affidavits released Thursday explained Becker was in line at the safety station and sent his pocketknife and a nail file on the belt by way of the X-ray machine. Security guard John Kent told Becker he couldn’t take the pocketknife into the meeting and would need to take it back to his vehicle.

In the affidavit, Becker admitted to becoming agitated and holding up the nail file attachment to his nail clippers and saying the file was “just as a lot of a weapon as the pocketknife blade.”

That’s when safety guards known as the sheriff’s office. Becker took his pocketknife and also the clippers to his truck, then returned to the court building to wait for a sheriff’s deputy to arrive.

Two witnesses — including Kent — told the sheriff’s deputy that Becker says something threatening. Kent stated Becker pointed the clippers/nail file at him and stated, “I could cut you with these if I wanted to.” Kent mentioned Becker made a jabbing motion at him when he spoke.

Another protection guard, David Ramirez, says he saw Becker turn out to be agitated and begin swearing before holding up the clippers and saying, “I could stab you with this.”

Becker was arrested and booked into the Weld County Jail on a charge of menacing, and was released on a ŭ,000 personal recognizance bond the next day.

On Thursday, DA spokeswoman Jennifer Finch says the case was “no-filed” after prosecutors reviewed it. That means charges have been dropped.
