What happens when the baby does not have enough oxygen?
Question by jimbie: What happens when the baby does not have adequate oxygen?
Forgive me for my lack of knowledge, but can anybody explain?
In issue births where the child is starved of oxygen throughout birth and subsequently suffers brain harm (there have been a couple of high profile circumstances of this lately), how does this happen?
I thought the child got it’s oxygen via the placenta and cord, and for the duration of birth, isn’t it still attached to the placenta via the cord?
Ideal answer:
Answer by meh…

if the placenta detaches before you give birth the baby could bleed to death or suffocate, the baby could also be strangled by the umbilical cord…any number of things

Sometime the baby can get turned around inside the womb and get tangled in the umbilical cord. Think of it as a tangled hose sometime they just get tangled and kinks form blocking the oxygen from getting to the baby.

the oxygen comes through the fluid so when the water breaks and the placenta rupture usually the baby starts coming… if it doesn’t they speed things along to prevent oxygen loss
but lack of oxygen can kill brain cells therefore causing mental problems like retardation
