Wait until the baby is here, or when you are in labour. If you were to sterilise them then the water in the bottles can go a bit funny – would you drink the droplets of water left in there after a few weeks?

You will feel twinges and labour is never too fast, so you’ll have tine to do it and leave them in the steriliser. They only take a few minutes to do, so you could do it the day you get back. Hospitals have their own bottles that you can use if you want.

Good luck with the new arrival xxx

After Lala’s comment…..I don’t understand you when you say you only have to sterilize once and then you can wash them in warm water afterwards. DO NOT DO THIS! After a feed, yes you should wash them first, but ALWAYS sterilise them afterwards.
I once sterilised all of the bottles, only for my husband to wash them back out again in warm water – I had to re sterilize them again.
Water has chemicals in it, and at boiling point most of the germs will be killed off.
When you fill up the bottles, always used pre-boiled water.

If you choose to sterilize the bottles now, you will have to keep them sealed in order to maintain sterility. Because objects open to air do not remain sterile, you might have to sterilize everything again anyway. Sterilization does not take long, so even if you wait until you have the baby, you can ask a family member to start the sterilizer before you leave the hospital.

Nope. I think you’ve got the microwave one, like I have?

The sterilisation will only last for around 4 minutes so it’s a bit early to get the bottles sorted out yet.

That said, it’s good to practise so you know how to do it, probably best to set an alarm for 3am, then blunder down to the kitchen to do it, to simulate real life!

    Good Luck!

    Ha, I have that one

I wouldnt do it now since they only last 24 hours before you have to sterlize them again.

When you go into labour get a family member to sterlize them and they can bring it to you

I will say though the avent bottles are not very good. I had to change from them to Tommy Tippie, since avent kept leaking xxx

Go for it. Being 37 weeks it could really happen any time. I was like you and wanted everything ready. That is good because when you come home from the hospital you will be exhausted. I would also go ahead and prepare meals and freeze them. Cooking was one thing I had no desire to do. I am pregnant again and my plan is to prepare tons of meals and freeze them.

Technically you only have to sterilize a bottle once and then you can just wash it in warm water. I see a lot of people said to wait, but if you are putting them in the cabinet they shouldn’t be exposed to something. If there is something that bad in the air, the baby is probably going to breath it in and be exposed to it.

no as they dont last very long sterilised, i waited until i got home with my daughter and washed and sterilised them then. as youll be using the steam steriliser the bottles are only sterile for a few minutes once taken out of the steriliser so its far too early to do them yet. either ask a friend or relative to do the first wash and sterilise when yuve had the baby so theyre ready for use when you get home or just do it when you get home its much easier and they are freshly clean for instant use. it can be hassle to do that depending on the labour you have so id recommend the already sterile bottles you can buy, some already have milk in them too, so youll have a few days worth of already sterile bottles and wont need to worry about the main ones ffor a while. good luck.

They don’t say sterile long. Most sterilisers only keep things sterile for 24 hours and then you need to do it again. In the hospital if you are bottle feeding they will provide you with the milk (whatever brand you want) and the bottle which will be sterile. Then when you get home you will just have to put it on. They don’t take long and it’s one of those jobs you really can’t do in advance. Even if you do it once in labour, taking into account the length of labour and time spent in hospital they will most likely still need doing again.
